Giro d’Italia overall leader Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) escaped his stage 3 crash in Horsens, Denmark, without any broken bones.

According to BMC Racing staff, Phinney underwent an X-ray examination on his injured right ankle at a Verona, Italy, hospital. Team doctor Dario Spinelli cleared the American of fractures and said he would examine the 21-year-old maglia rosa’s ankle later on Tuesday.

Phinney wrote on Twitter:

Doc says no fractures, still quite difficult to put pressure on it. Tomorrow is a new day! I yearn for BED. I’m just the slightest bit tired

The race’s first rest day is Tuesday, ahead of the stage 4 team time trial in Verona on Wednesday. Phinney holds a nine-second lead over Sky’s Geraint Thomas and 13 seconds over Alex Rasmussen (Garmin-Barracuda) in the general classification.

“We’ll take another look at his ankle later today and see how it’s healing,” said Spinelli. “It’s definitely good that this happened before a rest day, since the transport and treatment process took so long. Taylor will enjoy a good night of sleep without the stress of having to get ready to race.”
