Bikes Stolen From Cancer Charity Cyclists
Two days after completing a cross-country bike ride to raise cancer awareness, Zach Boyer and Chey Hillsgrove say their bikes were stolen.
Boyer and Hillsgrove, both college students, were visiting friends in Seattle after completing a 4,000 mile charity bike ride from Baltimore to Portland. They left their bikes locked on a rack on their van’s roof overnight in front of their friends’ home.
“We woke up in the morning and saw the window of our van was broken, the roof rack was entirely torn off and the bikes were gone,” Boyer said.
Boyer and Hillsgrove had spent 70 days biking to support the “4K for Cancer” program. “We give money to scholarships for young adults affected by cancer and toward overall awareness and fundraising,” Boyer said.
Boyer said he is certain the thieves knew they were stealing bikes being used for a charity ride, since the van was clearly labeled with “4K for Cancer” logos.
Boyer and Hillsgrove filed a police report and gave local bike and pawn shops their bikes’ serial numbers in case someone tried to sell them.
Boyer has set up a Facebook page for leads, but the bikes have not yet been recovered.
Still, Boyer said he is keeping things in perspective. “I’m still trying to look toward the positive, the positive being the ride itself, because it was spectacular. I recommend any able-bodied person do it, whether for charity or not.”
